Arthur Popper, Past Senate Chair, has been
Professor of Biology since 1987 when he joined the University as
Chair of the department (then Zoology). Since stepping down as chair,
Dr. Popper has served as director of the Neuroscience and Cognitive
Science (NACS) program and as Co-Director of the Center for Comparative
and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (C-CEBH). He just completed
a second term as chair of the campus Institutional Animal Care and
Use Committee (IACUC). He was elected twice to the Senate Executive
Committee and during that time served on a number of different committees,
and has chaired the Senate Programs, Curricula, and Courses Committee
(PCC). Dr. Popper has an active research laboratory (see www.life.umd.edu/biology/popperlab)
funded by the National Institute of Health and the Office of Naval
Research. Popper's lab studies the structure and function of the
auditory system, and its evolution.Outside of campus, Dr. Popper
serves as co-chair of the Publications Committee of the Association
for Research in Otolaryngology and is an elected Council Delegate
for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
He is a fellow of AAAS and the Acoustical Society of Ameica. Dr.
Popper is also editor of a 20+ volume set of books, the Springer
Handbook of Auditory Research.
