Proposal: In describing the standing committees of the University Senate, the Senate Bylaws designate the Campus Affairs Committee as a liaison between the campus community and the University Police on matters of safety and security. The committee is formally charged with gathering input from the community on safety and security issues on an annual basis. The 2014-2015 Campus Affairs Committee engaged in various efforts to gather information on safety concerns throughout the academic year.

Actions: The Campus Affairs Committee addressed its charge by meeting with Chief Mitchell and representatives from UMDPS, and through a survey sent to Senators and Committee members to identify the top safety concerns experienced by each constituency. The committee reviewed all results and identified commonalities between constituencies on concerns related to: pedestrian and traffic safety, safety and security at night, theft and building security, cybersecurity, and safety in inclement weather. On March 27, 2015, the Campus Affairs Committee voted to send an informational report to the SEC and Senate summarizing its findings.
