Senate Bill 16-17-17

Bill ID: 16-17-17
PCC ID: 16008
Name: PCC Proposal to Establish a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences
Proposed: 09/30/2016
Sponsor: PCC Committee
Proposal: The School of Public Health seeks to establish a Ph.D. program in Environmental Health Sciences within the School of Public Health, administered by the faculty of the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health (MIAEH). The degree will focus on human health, environmental epidemiology, risk assessment, environmental justice, and occupational health, consistent with the areas of expertise of the MIAEH faculty. MIAEH currently offers students flexible and individualized programs of study that lead to the Master of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences. In 2010, MIAEH also became the UMD home of the USM-wide doctoral program in Ph.D. Toxicology. Because toxicology is the focus area of only a small minority of SPHL faculty, student recruitment has been challenging: students are reluctant to be perceived as toxicologists when they are training and developing research foci within other areas of environmental health science. Thus, in order to better support the training of doctoral students and provide a better alignment of career aspirations with faculty expertise, the School is proposing a new Ph.D. program better matched to the full range of research within MIAEH.
