Proposal: At the November 15, 2016 SEC Meeting, Betsy Beise noted that the University System of Maryland (USM) had asked all of its institutions to develop a student social media privacy policy that aligns with its Policy on Student Social Media Privacy (V-1.20). The University of Maryland developed an interim University of Maryland Policy on Student Social Media Privacy (V-1.20[A]). This interim policy will be reviewed by the Senate prior to final approval by the President.

Actions: The Educational Affairs Committee reviewed the interim policy at its meeting on February 20. It submitted questions to the Student Affairs Committee that same day. At its March 10 meeting, the committee considered feedback from the Student Affairs Committee, and drafted questions for the Office of General Counsel (OGC). Feedback from the OGC was reviewed on March 31, when the committee tentatively decided to recommend several revisions to the policy.

The draft revisions were shared with faculty members from several Colleges who use social media in their classrooms, as well as with the Career Center and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The committee discussed the revisions and recommendations at its final meeting of the year, and voted to approve them by an email vote concluding May 15, 2017.
