Senate Bill 22-23-18

Bill ID: 22-23-18
Name: Technical Revisions to the University of Maryland Interim Policy on Full-Time Faculty Workload and Responsibilities (II-1.25[A])
Proposed: 11/28/2022
Sponsor: Faculty Affairs Committee
Proposal: The University Policy on Full-Time Faculty workload and Responsibilities was approved on March 4, 2022, on an interim basis pending Senate review. On October 17, 2022, the Senate Executive Committee charged the Faculty Affairs Committee with reviewing the policy to prepare for the Senate's consideration.

Currently, the policy provides that units must develop their initial faculty workload policies by December 1, 2022. The Faculty Affairs Committee became aware that although several units are working to develop their policies, they are challenged with meeting the December 1, 2022 deadline. Additionally, the Office of Faculty Affairs is developing guidance to assist units with developing their policies. Given the additional guidance that is being developed and that the Senate consideration of the policy will not occur until the Spring 2023 semester, the Faculty Affairs Committee recommends that the policy be amended to allow units until the end of this academic year, May 23, 2023, to develop their initial workload policies. Additionally, the policy is revised to address small editorial matters. These are non-substantive changes that can be addressed as technical amendments.

Decision Date: 11/14/2022
Decision: The FAC approved requesting that the University Interim Policy on Faculty Workload and Responsibilities be amended to extend the deadline to May 23, 2023, for units to develop their policies.
Actions: In reviewing the interim policy at its November 14, 2022 meeting, the FAC noted that the academic units were required to develop their unit policies by December 1, 2022. Based on feedback from several units that they would not have their policies developed by that date, and the committee's determination that additional guidance is needed to assist the units with developing their policies, the FAC approved requesting that the University Interim Policy on Faculty Workload and Responsibilities be amended to extend the deadline to May 23, 2023, for units to develop their policies.

On December 1, 2022, the Senate Chair, on behalf of the SEC, approved submitting the FAC's request to the President for approval.
