Senate Bill 24-25-40

Bill ID: 24-25-40
Name: Interim University of Maryland Policy and Procedures for Appointments of Staff to Emeritus Status (X-16.00 (A))
Proposed: 04/22/2025
Sponsor: Kanitta Tonggarwee, Office of the President
Proposal: The University of Maryland, College Park ("the University") currently lacks a formal process for awarding staff emerita/emeritus status, which is an honorary designation recognizing retirees' distinguished contributions and accomplishments throughout their university careers. This policy establishes a specific process for conferring such status upon eligible staff members who have retired from full-time University employment. Eligibility extends to regular exempt and nonexempt employees who served in a full-time capacity for twenty or more years. The policy aims to create a standardized approach to honor long-serving staff members who have made significant contributions to the University community and have a desire to continue contributing to the University after their retirement.

This proposal calla for the implementation of the formal process for awarding staff emerita/emeritus status to be able to honor staff members for meritorious service to the University.
