Proposal: The University of Maryland College park Policies and Procedures for Governing Faculty Grievances was created created in 1990 and amended in 2002. The adjudication process is handled through the University Senate and administered by the Senate Office. Because the policy and procedures are utilized infrequently, there a need for clarity in some areas of the procedures. In addition, the policy should be aligned with similar types of policies and procedures. A comprehensive review of the policy and procedures would help add clarity and consistency in the future.

Decision: The Faculty Affairs Committee voted to recommend revisions to the policy.
Actions: The Faculty Affairs Committee (FAC) began considering the policy at its meeting on October 2, 2017. The committee consulted with the Faculty Ombuds Officer, the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, the Executive Secretary and Director of the Senate, and the Office of General Counsel (OGC) throughout its review. The FAC researched grievance policies at peer institutions and reviewed adjudication procedures within existing University of Maryland processes for comparison. In November and January, the committee decided on principles that should be reflected in the policy and formed a subcommittee to develop the policy language. The subcommittee reported to the full committee in early March, 2018. The committee voted to approve the revisions to the policy on March 7, 2018.
