Proposal: The University System of Maryland (USM) Policy on the Naming of Facilities and Academic Programs (VI-4.00) provides for the naming of academic programs and facilities to honor scholars and other distinguished individuals. The University of Maryland currently has a policy and process through the Facilities Naming Committee on the naming of facilities, but has no policy or process for the naming of programs.

Actions: The committee began work on the charge at its meeting on September 3, 2019. At its meeting on September 23, the committee heard from the Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Programs and reviewed research on policies and practices at Big 10 and peer institutions. The committee's chair and coordinator met separately with the Provost, and with representatives of the President, the Vice President for Administration & Finance, and the Vice President for University Relations; findings where shared with the committee.

At its meeting on October 7, the committee reviewed and revised a draft policy and procedures. An outline of the draft was shared with stakeholders and deans.

Following consultation with the administration, the committee's work on the charge was suspended until additional perspective could be provided. The Senate leadership will revisit the charge in the Fall 2020 semester to determine next steps.

The Senate Leadership consulted with President Pines and agreed to delay consideration of the charge until Fall 2021.
