| Decision: | The SEC voted to charge the Ed Affairs Committee with a review of the Interim University of Maryland Policy and Procedures on the Naming of Facilities and Programs but agreed to postpone the charge until after the committee completed its current charge on the Diversity General Education Requirement. |

| Actions: | The committee began work on the charge at its meeting on September 3, 2019. At its meeting on September 23, the committee heard from the Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Programs and reviewed research on policies and practices at Big 10 and peer institutions. The committee's chair and coordinator met separately with the Provost, and with representatives of the President, the Vice President for Administration & Finance, and the Vice President for University Relations; findings where shared with the committee. At its meeting on October 7, the committee reviewed and revised a draft policy and procedures. An outline of the draft was shared with stakeholders and deans. Following consultation with the administration, the committee's work on the charge was suspended until additional perspective could be provided. The Senate leadership will revisit the charge in the Fall 2020 semester to determine next steps. The Senate Leadership consulted with President Pines and agreed to delay consideration of the charge until Fall 2021. Following a directive from the University System of Maryland (USM) that all of its institutions put in place procedures for the removal of names from facilities and programs, the Senate leadership worked collaboratively to revise the University's existing Facilities Naming Policy to also include Program naming and the removal of names from both facilities and programs. Based on the USM's deadline requirement, President Pines, approved the revised policy on September 20, 2021 on an interim basis, pending Senate review. The Educational Affairs Committee was informed of this change in process. |
